October 3, 2008 8:30- noon

Hello all,

There will be a second meeting to continue planning for the 2010 RA boys camp at Latham Springs. Saturday October 3, 2008 from 8:30 till noon! Come one, come all! If you were at the 1st meeting then you know how important it is to be back. If you missed the first one then no worries, come on down and see how God is moving!

The dates are set for the 2010 RA boys camp. It will be June 18 thru June 22 , 2010! This will be a great camp with lots of new and interesting activities and challenges but with the great R/A focus of living an "on-mission" lifestyle and the opportunity to find God in our everyday lives! The first change is the days of the camp. This year camp will be from Friday to Tuesday. With this we hope to be able to attract more men to camp to work with the boys!

God is really moving with His plans for camp this year. Would you please join Him in His work and come out Saturday the 3rd of October and see how He can use you?
Next Meeting set for October 3rd @0830, Latham Springs Camp

RA camp schedule was a mess

This is Mark J. Boone, Timber Crest Baptist; this was my first year at Latham Springs and possibly my last, as I may not be in the Waco area next time around.

As I see it there were two problems with the schedule. The first is simple and easily rectified: There was no quiet time for the boys to study their Bibles in the morning! What good are cabin devotionals at night if there is no Bible study in the morning? I had to resort to lamely suggesting to my cabin that they get up a few minutes before everyone else to read their Bibles. What I think they really need is a fifteen minute, maybe a half hour, segment after breakfast to go to their cabins, get their Bibles, go someplace quiet, and read.

Second, the schedule was either never solid or else very poorly communicated. It was impossible to fulfill my most basic duty of making sure I knew where all my boys were because of this. Here are some examples:

1. "Elective events in 'the wild' " was an all-camp activity the first day. The second day I and some others assumed we were to be with our church groups; at the end of the second day I learned we were to be with our morning color groups. I, and the boys, should have been informed of this at the beginning of the first day.

2. On the afternoon of the first day I had trouble figuring out whether lads and crusaders from my cabin were to split up for swimming and paintball or whether the whole cabin was to go together. I began by assuming the written schedule was correct: lads and crusaders would split up. Then an announcement was made over lunch that one cabin would not split up. I asked about it and was told that the schedule was correct. Literally seconds before splitting my boys up I was told by another leader in my cabin that the whole cabin was to go to the water park.

3. The written schedule for portions of Wednesday simply said "same as Tuesday." Not so Thursday; we were left to infer that Thursday's hours were also "same as Tuesday." But they weren't: At least one thing was different. The bonfire was not even on the schedule!

Bottom line: The written schedule was woefully, dangerously vague and unreliable. As a consequence I spent probably half the daylight hours not knowing where I and my boys were supposed to be in the next fifteen minutes (sometimes I didn't know who my boys were).

A completely written and DETAILED schedule is a necessity for next year.

FBC Maypearl at RA camp 2009

A few pics that are mostly of kids from "the Pearl". Just wanted to get some on to see how it's working.

The pool was a big player with our kids as usual. Some (especially the younger boys) preferred it to the lake. The climbing wall and zip lines are all I have heard about since getting back.

Fishing was fun for all as we had reasonably good luck. Many of my guys enjoyed being able to come back in the evening as an elective to fish again.

As far as I'm concerned, the less time in the cabins the better. They go nuts!

Rock climbing was fun for all (even more than the zip lines?) Of course all the boys enjoy eating. Chinese food night did not go over well.

Not sure why so many of my kids go in for the weird camp haircuts but it's a trend that started last year and has really grown this year. Next year Mohawks for everybody!!! (Except the leaders of course).

Bible study was really enjoyable. My guys thought that building the tree was pretty cool.

All in all a great camp for FBC Maypearl. Three boys gave their hearts to the Lord! What a great ending to a wonderful week.

RA Camp 2009

Just wanted to add a few images from RA Camp 2009 at Latham Springs.

New blog site!!!

Welcome all to the new Latham Springs RA Camp blog site. Use this site to communicate to the other churches involved in the Latham Springs RA Camp about questions or concerns, activities you are involved in, or any other topic you feel may be beneficial to the other RA chapters. Hopefully this will be a tool we can use to grow and improve the RA camp at Latham Springs to help more boys (and men) to learn about and grow in their relationship with our Lord and Risen Savior.
